Politics

Post by Puns » Thu Aug 22, 2019 10:00 am

As anyone who follows me on Facebook you know I’m very civic-minded and love to discuss what’s going on in our country. I get caught up in the negative aspects going on a lot more than I get caught up in the positives, but I’d love to celebrate our victories where I can. I’d love to have a civil discussion with anyone and everyone. It’s completely cool if we disagree. I hope we do in fact, because I can gather insight from why you feel the way you do about a particular element of our government and maybe I can learn something from another’s viewpoint. I’m always looking to grow and by getting info from people who feel differently than I do is one way that I really enjoy doing so. I will respect your opinions, I will ask questions, and I will gladly answer any questions you may have about why I feel the way that I do.

My only question is why do you hate America, and when did you become a member of the Communist Party (and did the former lead to the latter or vice versa)?

I hate what America has devolved into. And I’m a socialist, not a communist!

Pretty sure Trump won't be impeached. In fact, he'll use that "victory" to double down and destroy his political rivals, handily winning the next election and then instituting Martial Law, imprisoning or "suiciding" anyone who speaks against him, because we've let him do whatever he pleases so he will do anything and everything. Meanwhile his supporters will cheer like their home team won, all the while getting poorer and poorer while his interests get richer and richer. And you know what? We deserve it.

I actually floated this exact same scenario to a coworker this morning! The guy is a 72 year old retired military veteran who is a deeply convicted liberal who is just bored and looking for something to do in his spare time. He really knows his shit too. He knows the names and can cite specific laws Trump has broken and is always going on about Trump needing to be impeached but having no faith in the process and the system anymore. So he said he loves that there is finally an impeachment inquiry taking place but doesn’t believe anything will happen but this ending up making Trump stronger and further invigorating his base. I floated the idea that when Trump gets re-elected, because I believe he will, that he will round up dissidents in FEMA camps. I also wondered aloud if he, being further invigorated by beating the impeachment inquiry, would go after his political enemies as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had his own private army, like insanely wealthy people are able to do, and have them attack Congress or something, cementing himself as dictator.

I can see the liberals and Democratic leadership being eliminated with the help of foreign agents, then him ordering missiles into Black and Latino neighborhoods and wiping them out too. Then when he's ready to retire back to his golden tower, he'll have his idiot fucking family set up to run the government.

The reality is that impeachment proceedings are highly unpopular with Americans. If they drag this out in the house it's going to do what it did to Clinton and make the public more sympathetic to Trump. I severely doubt that Mitch McConnell will even allow this to go to vote in the Senate, which he gets to wrap in rhetoric about getting the country back to work legislating (though we can argue that McConnell has done more to hold up legislation than any single person, but this is America, we have short attention spans.) which will be a win for them in the eyes of the public. I see a lot of more liberal-minded people celebrating this, but I don't think there's enough of a shift in our culture to really stop our slide towards a more authoritative rule in this country. I see Trump getting re-elected, we haven't had a one-term President in nearly 30 years now and I don't see that changing here.

Of course. Then his police will be dragging you into the streets and beating you for daring to speak against him (and for your evil, liberal ways).

Not surprising, people have had enough time to realize that it’s going nowhere with Cocaine Mitch leading the senate

I've said he won't even bring it to the floor of the Senate.

Honestly, there’s only two reasons to really bring it up to begin with imo. Pelosi knows that’s it’s going to rally Trump voters and impeachment as a whole is not popular historically so that’ll turn off the undecideds. They have to hope that it going nowhere will rally the left-wing base so much that it’ll manage to outdo the other side or she knows that their current crop of candidates won’t be able to beat Trump so they’ll let him have just have an even more rallied and vocal base for 2024.

Why is it that impeachment is so unpopular? I’m a far, far left leaning well informed voter who doesn’t trust either major party and only wants to see justice be served. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s a Republican or a Democrat who is impeached as long as the president isn’t breaking laws and acting unconstitutionally. Are people so invested in their own party line that they don’t want to see the truth?

I think a lot of people grow weary of politics in general and they really don't like it when you disrupt the daily routine. Impeachment can disrupt the entire nation and for most folks, they would rather forgive transgressions and move on with business as usual of their daily life than actually deal with the repercussions of this.

Personally, I think the president is dangerous and has incriminated himself more than enough to have impeachment brought against him, but I know how much of a fuck-up Nancy Pelosi is and can see this easily turning into a dog chasing it's own tail and going nowhere.

Yikes!

I thought having to choose between the not so subtle racist and the guy who has abused the cities funding for the purpose of getting extra revenue for his personal business was a bad choice.
