Since we don't have a thread since the board's rebirth I figured I'd restart it.

There's been a lot of discussion about what constitutes being a film with a lot of purists saying that theatrical release is intragal to this. Steven Spielberg made a comment this week that releasing a film on Netflix automatically makes it a tv movie or some approximation of that. I'm not sure I 100% agree with him on this as good film is a good film, no matter the distribution method.

On the other hand I understand why the theatrical experience is something people want to preserve. Once you're in the theater you've committed to the experience of seeing the film, most people have carved out time in their lives to watch the film uninterrupted from the distractions of life. It's very easy for the average person to only halfway pay attention to something they're watching at home and be distracted by cell phones and other such things (my rule is the cell phone remains out of reach when I am watching a movie at home).

There's also the feeling that streaming is becoming the dumping ground for studios when they feel like they have a bad film that they know won't perform well in the theaters. The new Cloverfield movie and Bright were released on Netflix with huge viewership while both were critically panned, it's almost assured that these films wouldn't have had as many people watching them had they gone to theatrical release first. I can easily see this becoming a thing with studios, especially Paramount who's in the process of trying to right their ship at the moment and releasing a dud theatrically would have hurt the image of bringing higher quality material to theaters that their new boss seems intent on driving (this is the dude that turned Fox around after Tom Rothman nearly demolished their reputation, so I have a bit of confidence in what he can pull off.).

I'm not sure what the future will 100% bring but the times, they are a changing.

I think theater chains will be A thing of the past in the next 5 to 10 years, maybe just big cities will have theaters and even then it will be a niche thing.

also, in the next five years pretty much any retail facing job will be done on screens and anyone not a technician will be fired.

The biggest problem with going to the movies is the cost. It’s just insane nowadays and the theater chains aren’t doing anything to try and make it better. Prices just keep going out. Tickets to a 2D movie can run at $17 at some theaters in NYC. Even I would t go to the movies as often as I do without having Moviepass.

I wish the chains would work with Moviepass. Some, particularly AMC, fight Moviepass. Their argument was literally how dare you get our customers used to cheap ticket prices because of you go out of business we will lose customers who don’t want to go back to paying our insane prices.

And I don’t know that I think Moviepass will last forever. They have to be losing money like crazy. Stock prices for HMNY (the data collecting company that is the majority owner of Moviepass) has plummeted over the past few months, especially after they added more shares to the market. At its highest the stock hit almost $40 a share late last year. Now it’s about $5 a share. And volatile as hell.

If the chains would embrace Moviepass, it could actually really change the industry and get more people into going to movies again. Everyone I know who has a Moviepass has upped their going to the movies. When the insane price isn’t an issue, it’s worth going!

Anyway, to the original question about what constitutes a movie, I’m in the camp of believing it needs to have a theatrical release to really be a movie. That’s why I only count movies I see in theaters on my yearly list. Even if I watch a movie at home directly released to Netflix that was “released” in the year, I wouldn’t count it.

I don’t even need a wide release or a long release. Give me a one week showing at one theater in NYC and I’ll count it. I’m pretty sure Netflix had to give their films that sort of theatrical run for award consideration, which is why they do it with Mudbound but not Bright.

I also think the question of quality and overloading the market comes up. Netflix is so hungry for content, and not worried about selling tickets/getting ratings for their movies, that there’s no reason for them to not just put out there everything and anything. It’s a double edged sword. On the one hand, it means more opportunities for creative types to get their work out there. On the other, so much content means eventually you don’t give any of it a try because there’s just too much and most of it is mediocre at best.

As someone who needs to get his butt off the couch and start taking my screenwriting more seriously, the idea of having more avenues to possibly sell content to is nice. I can’t lie about that. Not that it’s easier to get eyes on your materiel, but certainly there’s just more companies out there that are begging for new content.

There is definitely a glut of content out there, so much so that I maybe watch 2-3 shows a week now and try to sneak a movie in once a week if I'm lucky (it's really hard when your girlfriend hogs the tv and watches over 30 different shows a week. Not to mention just keeping the house maintained usually means I dont sit down until after 10 pm most nights and I'm wiped out by that point).

I noticed that the long gestrating 80's sequel properties are getting greenlit almost instantly with Cobra Kai being a success.

The Tremors series with Kevin Bacon got passed on last week after being greenlighted earlier.

I think that series seems to be content being direct to video hokieness at this point. It's not quite the cultural phenomenon that Rambo or Bill and Ted were either.

Rambo was too, I remember hearing Stallone talking about a fifth film a decade ago right after the last one was released but it ultimately went nowhere for ages (and was almost rebooted as a pg-13 film at one point *shudders*) until this week.

With B99, Blacklist & Gotham all held til Spring, Looks like the fall for me is just going to be:

The Good Place & Superstore on NBC
The Simpsons & Family Guy on FOX

Unless they renew Agents of SHIELD which at this point, would most likely be held until Spring anyway.

None of the new shows this season jump out to me at all. I'm practically done with Network TV. Their way of measuring a shows success is a joke and not sensible in this day and age with so many ways to take in content.

That and the writing/acting on most network shows is lazy/dumb.
